A dark room v. a darkroom

When you think of New York neighborhoods and “Digital,” what comes to mind?

For me, it’s gotta be either: A posh, statement-making boutique in the Meatpacking District—à la the Apple Store (or the now-closed Samsung space) , or something edgy and cavernous tucked inside a nondescript Bushwick warehouse .

The LES?

Not usually top of mind. (And let’s please not bring up that one-time immersive Van Gogh experience at Pier 36... it undermines my point .)

What I’m saying is: Meatpacking or Bushwick is to Digital, as The LES is to Analog.

(Long wind-up, I know. But we got there.)

Enter: AUTOPHOTO —a new creative space at 121 Orchard Street that’s bringing a bit of analog flair back to 10002.

It’s part gallery, part living archive, and part “wait, are we back in 1998?” Featuring six fully restored vintage photobooths—including rare wide-format strips, color chemistry prints, and one of the few surviving Polaroid booths. (Click, flop, blow, wait…)

But AUTOPHOTO isn’t just about snapping pics.

It’s also a showcase of nearly a century of photobooth culture—artifacts, artwork, and exhibitions exploring how four frames can capture intimacy, identity, and accidental poetry.

Given the prime location, the real estate angle is this: AUTOBOOTH appears to be a non-profit. This could mean any of a number or things, one being favorable lease terms, which will help it to have some staying power. (Watch out, Tenement Museum!)

I say that lovingly, a great segue to this outro: For the romantics —AUTOPHOTO is getting ready to launch The Sure Thing Chapel: a tiny Vegas-style ceremony space where couples can say “I do” and seal the moment with a freshly printed strip.
