Part 1: Close, but no Cigar

This is a two-part story about furniture replacements on the Lower East Side—specifically within the oh-so-fun context of a co-op .

It may also apply to condo folks —since condos operate in a similar way, with collective charges and shared services among residents.

But for our friends in stand-alone houses :
You're typically spared the extra layer of building bureaucracy. You're the lords and ladies of your domain , deciding when and how to remove or replace furniture.

(Unless, of course, your HOA has thoughts— requiring certain hours, vendors, or compliance with municipal rules. But for today’s purposes, let’s call this a “C-thang,” where “C” = Co-op.)

Now back to our tale…

This is about the removal and replacement of Sven, our beloved couch.

Sven’s been with us since before our first kid was born —and since said kid is now 8⃣, Sven had a full and glorious life: Lounging people, hosting overnight guests, absorbing countless spills, drips, and drops.

Simply put: It was time.

Fun fact: We didn’t name Sven. That was Article (the furniture brand). They named him—and the whole Sven Collection. We just gave him pronouns .

So we went shopping for a replacement—and instead of another sofa with a chaise, we chose a sleek single piece. Still Article. This one was called: Cigar

A 92” sofa. Perfect. Sven had been 100”, and since he'd made it through multiple apartment moves without issue, we didn’t give the size a second thought. In fact, we only considered how Cigar would look in our living room .

Do you see where this is going?

We ordered Cigar. We scheduled delivery. We contacted our management office, as we require permission for removal and delivery, and also need to connect with maintenance to ensure that the team pads the elevator.

And by some miracle, everything was going smoothly. Delivery was confirmed, the building was ready, and I sat by waiting for the truck.

The delivery team showed up exactly at the precise time, rang our doorbell , and I opened the door to find them there: sans sofa! Uh-oh.
