They’ve considered a place in Midtown, eliminating the (train) commute entirely , and then visited Harlem, Wakefield, Crestwood (Tuckahoe), North White Plains, Chappaqua (New Castle), and Goldens Bridge (North Salem).
They’ve also looked at a property on the Lower East Side, a neighborhood with history, full of families, and on the verge of having an open, spectacular, accessible river-side park.

Verdict: So what did the Garcias choose?

This publication is a Lower East Side love letter , so of course they chose 577 Grand Street #F1407! Here are a few reasons why, though:
The Garcias’ choice of the Grand Street unit means they’ve secured the lowest upfront purchase price in the lineup, saving between $21K and $71K compared to outer borough and Westchester houses.
Their monthly costs are the lowest as well (virtually tied with Harlem), shaving off as much as $4,600 every month versus the most expensive option.
Space is tighter—1,000 sq ft compared to homes ranging from 1,686 to 4,554 sq ft—but the real win is time. Their Lower East Side commute clocks in at about 30 minutes by subway , which is nearly 86 hours less than Goldens Bridge—a savings equal to two full workweeks each month. That’s time to walk pets , push strollers , and grab a cocktail at Bacaro .
Yes, the apartment will need upgrades, just like the others. But those $21K–$71K saved upfront and another $27K over the first six months in reduced monthly costs give the Garcias a ready renovation fund without breaking stride. (We won’t broach move-in dates, timing, and carrying costs here, so run with it.)
